Ashley Castle

This was a period of serious unrest and civil war, and the castle was slighted in 1155, early in the reign of King Stephen's successor, King Henry II.

However, within fifty years, during the reign of Henry II's son King John, the castle was repaired and reinstated by William Briwere the elder.

The Church of St Mary the Virgin lies within the outer bailey to the north of the ringwork.
