Baron Grey of Powis

The Greys and Tiptofts divided not only the estates but also Powis Castle near Welshpool, Wales.

Edward Sutton, 2nd Baron Dudley

Their son was Edward Grey, 3rd Baron Grey of Powis, to whom his uncle John, Lord Dudley, sold the Tiptoft-Dudley portion of Powis Castle.

John Charleton, 1st Baron Cherleton

John Charleton split his last years between his properties at Apley Castle in Shropshire, Charlton Hall in Shrewsbury (the site now occupied by the theatre) and Powis Castle in Mid-Wales.

Charleton acquired Pole castle (today's Welshpool) on his marriage, and from 1310 to 1315 he built the basis of the present Powis Castle.

John Sutton, 3rd Baron Dudley

He succeeded his father Edward Sutton, 2nd Baron Dudley as Baron Dudley in 1532 and immediately began to sell his patrimony, including half of Powis Castle.

When improvements to the castle were being considered in 1772, the architect Thomas Farnolls Pritchard recommended that the bedroom be wholly preserved.

Sir Edward’s wife was a Roman Catholic and the family’s allegiance to Rome and to the Stuart kings was to shape its destiny for over a century.

Ranulf de Blondeville, 6th Earl of Chester

Ranulf's third sister Agnes (Alice) inherited, along with a share in other estates with her sisters, lands between the Ribble and the Mercy rivers, Powis Castle near Welshpool in Wales, Chartley Castle, Staffordshire, and land at Bugbrooke, Northamptonshire.

St David's School, Middlesex

During World War II the school was evacuated to the Powis Castle estate in Montgomeryshire, but returned to its Ashford site in 1946.


Henry Herbert, 1st Earl of Powis

Oakly Park was his main country home until 1771, when he sold it to Lord Clive ('Clive of India') and moved into Powis Castle, the seat of his Earldom, near Welshpool, Montgomeryshire.
