During the game, Ashley Martin became the first woman to play and score in a NCAA football game and the second woman to play and score in a college game in any division.

The only earlier female player to score in a college football game was Liz Heaston, who kicked for Willamette University, an National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) school, in 1997.

Liz Heaston had previously kicked two extra points for NAIA Willamette University on October 18, 1997 in a game against Linfield College.

Jacksonville State University

The university's football team gained national attention in 2001 when Junior placekicker Ashley Martin became the first female football player to score a point in a Division I game tallying 3 points against Cumberland University.
