Born in Bontoc, Mountain Province, Avellana was educated at the Ateneo de Manila AB '37, where he developed what turned out to be a lifelong interest in the theater.
He was born in Cavite, Philippine Islands, born November 19, 1862; attended the Ateneo de Manila and the Nauti School, Manila, Philippine Islands.
He studied his secondary studies at the St. Clement’s College in Iloilo, Ateneo de Manila and Beaumont College in Berkshire, England.
He graduated Associate of Arts cum laude at Ateneo de Manila on 1935 and Bachelor of Science in Commerce summa cum laude, New York University in 1938.
He is also known to be the only member in the group who did not went to Ateneo de Manila University, and rather he was a high school alumnus to Ateneo's rival school, De La Salle University.
