The Tigers would make their way back to the UAAP Finals for the 2nd straight season after surviving three knockout games which included their final elimination round game in which they knocked out the defending champion Ateneo Blue Eagles for the last Final Four slot, and stunning the top-seeded NU Bulldogs by winning two straight games to advance to the UAAP Finals where they battled the De La Salle Green Archers.
Unfortunately, the Tiger Cubs were eliminated by the Kiefer Ravena led Ateneo Blue Eaglets squad in the Final Four despite having a twice-to-beat advantage against the Eaglets.

In their Final Four, Ferrer once again faced off against Kiefer Ravena and the Ateneo Blue Eagles, this time in the senior's division.

In his final season with the Tiger Cubs, Ferrer was crowned the Junior's Most Valuable Player where he led the Tiger Cubs into the Finals where they faced off once again with Ravena and the Blue Eaglets who finished the elimination round undefeated at 14-0 with an automatic Finals berth and a 1-0 advantage in a virtual best-of-5 final series.

At the end of the elimination round, the Lady Eagles of the Ateneo de Manila University and the Lady Bulldogs of the National University emerged on the top of standings in their respective group via complete sweep 4–0.
At 6-foot-5, Gonzales played for the 2002 UAAP championship squad of the Ateneo de Manila University Blue Eagles, and was named co-Finals MVP, along with teammate Larry Fonacier.
