The deeper roots of AOML can be traced to the oceanographic investigations of the U.S. Coast Survey beginning in the mid-19th century under the direction of Professor Alexander Dallas Bache, great grandson of Benjamin Franklin and a pre-eminent U.S. science figure of the age.

Forde became a researcher in the Marine Geology and Geophysics laboratory at the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration's (NOAA) Atlantic Oceanographic and Meteorological Laboratory (AOML) while an undergraduate at Columbia during the summer of 1973.
After arriving on Virginia Key, the road passes by the University of Miami's Rosenstiel School of Marine and Atmospheric Science, NOAA's Atlantic Oceanographic and Meteorological Laboratory (AOML), the Miami Seaquarium, MAST Academy (the former site of Planet Ocean), and the Miami Marine Stadium.
