2 unusual facts about Auckland railway station


Auckland Railway Station

In 2011, the platforms were upgraded by Auckland Transport to prepare them for use as an alternative to Britomart for the 2011 Rugby World Cup.

The platforms were not used during the 2011 Rugby World Cup, but remain a backup station and could be utilised for future routes such as a restarted Waikato Connection to Hamilton.


New Zealand Railways Corporation

Railway stations in Auckland, Rotorua, Christchurch, Dunedin, Napier and Oamaru were sold, along with substantial tracts of land previously used for rail operations.

Waitakere Railway Station

In 1980, after the daily service between Auckland and Helensville was withdrawn, it became the terminus for passenger trains and in railway terms the northernmost passenger station on the national rail network (geographically the former Auckland Railway Station was further north).

Westfield Railway Station

The locomotive and wagon repair facilities saw steam-era engine sheds and servicing facilities at Auckland, Otahuhu, Papakura, Helensville and Mercer all close as well as the 1950s-era Parnell Diesel Depot.
