While studying library science, Lorde supported herself by working various odd jobs such as factory worker, ghost writer, social worker, X-ray technician, medical clerk, and arts and crafts supervisor, moving out of Harlem to Stamford, Connecticut and beginning to explore her lesbian sexuality.
Ferguson is most renowned for the concept of "queer of color critique" from his book Aberrations in Black, which is exemplified by the work of Audre Lorde, CherrĂe Moraga, Barbara Smith, and the Combahee River Collective and said to be critiques that do not presume homogeneity across racial or national groups.
Some key thinkers and activists are Charlotte Bunch, Rita Mae Brown, Adrienne Rich, Audre Lorde, Marilyn Frye, Mary Daly, Sheila Jeffreys and Monique Wittig (although the latter is more commonly associated with the emergence of queer theory).
