Ayas, Aosta Valley

It is made up of several frazioni (locally officially called hameaux, in French), the two major ones being Antagnod which holds the town hall and the main parish, and Champoluc.

Champoluc

Champoluc is a village in, and the main centre of the commune of Ayas which is co-extensive with the Val d'Ayas in the province of Val d'Aosta northern Italy.

It is the largest village in the commune of Ayas, lying at an altitude of 1568 meters in a broad flat part of the valley.

Turkish Brigade

The core of the 1st Turkish Brigade was the 241st Infantry Regiment based at Ayaş which was supplemented with volunteers to raise it to brigade level.


Armenian carpet

Francesco Balducci Pegolotti, a Florentine merchant stationed in Cyprus, reported in his La pratica della mercatura that from 1274 to 1330, carpets (kaperts) were imported from the Armenian cities of Ayas and Sis to Florence.
