The collection is named after Philip Bate who gave his collection of musical instruments to the University of Oxford in 1968, on the condition that it was used for teaching and was provided with a specialist curator to care for and lecture on it.
In 2012 he recorded a CD entitled Awakening Princesses using original 18th century flutes from the Bate Collection of Musical Instruments of University of Oxford as a documentary-research project.
South of Christ Church is an entrance to Christ Church Meadow and, still on the east side, the Oxford University Faculty of Music, containing the Bate Collection of Musical Instruments.
