"Working with Howard I. Chapelle, he directed the construction of some thirty museum-quality scale models to illustrate the development of American warship design. In 1981, he organized the Smithsonian's exhibition to mark the 200th anniversary of the Battle of Yorktown, entitled "By Sea and By Land: Victory with the Help of France.
His father was a veteran of the American Revolution and had been present at the surrender of Lord Cornwallis and his forces at the Battle of Yorktown.
He enlisted as a private in the 12th Regiment, New York Volunteer Infantry, and fought the First Battle of Bull Run, the Battle of Yorktown, the Seven Days' Battles, the Battle of Fredericksburg, and the Battle of Antietam.
