The community was originally named after the city of Beddington in Surrey, England, and began as a Canadian Pacific Railway station.
Sir Francis was a great-grandson of Sir Nicholas Throckmorton, who had changed his name to Carew on inheriting the Beddington estate from his maternal uncle, Sir Francis Carew (died 1611).

Beddington Farm was to replace the existing garages at Godstone and Chelsham and operated both LB tendered routes and existing London Country Croydon area routes.
James Watney (1832–1886) of Beddington, Surrey, and Thorney House, Palace Gate, Kensington, was Conservative MP for East Surrey from 1871–1885 and Master of the Mercers' Company in 1879.
After graduating, he worked as a field archaeologist in Milton Keynes, then worked on the major excavation of a prehistoric settlement and Roman villa site at Beddington near Croydon with Lesley.
In 1981, there were 300 Superdrug stores in the United Kingdom and they opened their 11,148 m² (120,000 ft²) distribution centre and office complex at Beddington Lane in Croydon.
