His works are held by a variety of institutions including the West Point Academy, the National Portrait Gallery, the Smithsonian Institution, the Iowa State Historical Society and the Wright Museum of Art at Beloit College.
As a young lawyer, he worked with such notables as Alexander Hamilton and Aaron Burr, and toward the end of his career, he served on a case with Abraham Lincoln, where they each represented clients in a land dispute associated with Beloit College.

He has taught and lectured at the University of Notre Dame in Indiana, the University of Alabama in Tuscaloosa, Beloit College, Wisconsin, and is Professor of Humanities in the Center for East Asian Studies at the Chinese University of Hong Kong.
