His service in Congress as territorial delegate from Ohio gave Anna and their children a chance to visit his family at Berkeley, their plantation on the James River.
It is named after Benjamin Harrison V, a signer of the Declaration of Independence and a Governor of Virginia, who lived nearby at Berkeley Plantation.

In July 1862, at Harrison's Landing (now Berkeley Plantation), Virginia, Norton, as regimental bugler, was the first ever to play "Taps", which was written then and there by Gen. Daniel Butterfield, the regimental commander.
