Garland gained prominence for her role as Fred MacMurray's second wife, Barbara Harper Douglas, in the 1960s sitcom My Three Sons,a role which she played from 1969 until the series ended in 1972 and for which she is particularly identified.
The daughter of American film and television actress Beverly Garland, she was born in Encino, California.

Maxwell subsequently appeared in such series as Decoy, with Beverly Garland, Peter Gunn (twice), Alfred Hitchcock Presents (five episodes), Whirlybirds, Black Saddle, The Man and the Challenge, The Deputy, Cain's Hundred, Follow the Sun, Hong Kong, Target: The Corruptors, and Mr. Novak.
He also appeared that season as Eddie Fox in the episode "The Christmas Show" of ABC's short-lived The Bing Crosby Show, starring Bing Crosby and Beverly Garland, and in a third sitcom as well in the role of Norman in the episode entitled "Look Who's a Sailor" on CBS's short-lived The Baileys of Balboa.
From this performance, Virginia Martindale, casting director for Don Fedderson Productions, offered her the role of Polly Williams Douglas, wife of Chip Douglas on My Three Sons, a role she played for two years (1970-72), opposite Fred MacMurray and London's best friend, Beverly Garland.
