5 unusual facts about Bhowani Junction

Bhowani Junction

It starred Ava Gardner as Victoria Jones, an Anglo-Indian who has been serving with the British armed forces, and Stewart Granger as Colonel Rodney Savage, a (British) Indian Army officer.

The change was presumably required because the book's conclusion was in contradiction to the conventions of Hollywood, in which dashing European officers, played by leading movie stars like Stewart Granger, are not expected to lose out to gauche, mixed-race railway-workers played by less-established actors (as Bill Travers was in 1956).

It has particular connections to Nightrunners of Bengal, the first novel Masters wrote in the series (though not the earliest in terms of its historical setting), which dealt with the Indian Rebellion of 1857.

Bhusawal

The famous American 1956 movie, Bhowani Junction features a railway station that was modelled on the Bhusawal railway station.

The fictional Indian town of Bhowani, the setting of the historical novels Nightrunners of Bengal and Bhowani Junction by John Masters, is thought to be modeled on Bhusawal.

Kingsway tramway subway

The remaining northern part of the subway is sometimes used in films, for example as itself in the Stephen Poliakoff film Hidden City, the secret entrance to the base in the film version of The Avengers and a railway tunnel in the film Bhowani Junction.
