He played his first senior match for the Melbourne Football Club, aged 19, against St Kilda, at the Junction Oval on 14 May 1898 (round one).

Because the Melbourne Cricket Ground and the Lake Oval were taken over by the United States Air Force as bases, Melbourne and South Melbourne had to play their home games elsewhere, whilst the Junction Oval for two seasons and the Western Oval for 1942 were also commandeered.
Two years later, in November 1961, Illingworth was selected for Jack Potter's XI in an invitational one-day single innings match against Bill Lawry's XI at Junction Oval.
Their official home ground is the Melbourne Cricket Ground, however they also play home games at Casey Fields, Camberwell Sports Ground and Junction Oval.
