unusual facts about Bikini Atoll

Seaborne target

Target ships are vessels, typically obsolete or captured warships, used for naval gunnery practice or for weapons testing – perhaps most spectacularly in Operation Crossroads (1946), where 95 ships were sunk in a U.S. nuclear weapons test at Bikini Atoll.

Stephen Roskill

He was the senior British observer at the Bikini Atomic tests in 1946, and served as Deputy Director of Naval Intelligence, 1946-48 before retiring as a captain, due to increasing deafness caused by exposure to gun detonations.

Typhoon Rusa

The monsoon trough spawned a tropical depression on August 22 north of Bikini Atoll and southwest of Wake Island.

Vixen 03

In January 1954 a United States Air Force Boeing C-97 Stratofreighter codenamed Vixen 03 takes off from the Buckley Naval Air Station in Colorado on a late-night flight transporting a top-secret cargo from the Rocky Mountain Arsenal to testing grounds near the Bikini Atoll in the Pacific Ocean.
