He died at sea of dysentery whilst going to Greece accompanied by his uncle Pierre Prévost, the panorama painter - the precise site of death was, according to the sources, "across from Bizerte, in sight of Athens, near the Isle of Cerigo, in the Ionian Sea.
There are two towns (municipalities) in the Menzel Jemil Delegation, Menzel Jemil and Menzel Abderrahmane; however they are both considered part of the city of Bizerte metropolitan area.
Eventually rail lines were built all along the coast from the northwest at Tabarka to Bizerte, to Tunis and Sousse, to Sfax and Gabès; inland routes went from the coastal ports to Gafsa, to Kasserine, and to El Kef.
