A small community formed near this time two miles (3 km) south of Boggy Depot named New Boggy Depot.

During the Civil War a Union raiding party fought a Confederate group at the Battle of Middle Boggy Depot a few miles northeast of Boggy Depot, which had become the major supply depot in Indian Territory for the Confederates.
"Nunih Waiyah" was originally the name of a sacred mound in Mississippi where Choctaws brought the bones of their ancestors to rest and established the tribe. Afterward, during a time of constitutional experimentation, it had changed back and forth from Nanih Waiyah to Doaksville, Skullyville, Fort Towson and Boggy Depot.
