Maad Saloum, a Serer royal title sometimes called Bour Saloum
It is named after Edmond Bour, whose work on minimal surfaces won him the 1861 mathematics prize of the French Academy of Sciences.
Since then, the students have partnered themselves with the community of M'Bour, Thiès Senegal in Western Africa and are currently working on a variety of programs there related to the three pillars of the project: Health, Education and Microeconomy.
The project produced eleven research papers and supported various community-based initiatives, including the Ishaqbini Hirola Conservancy and the Bour-Algi Giraffe Sanctuary.
A 'Bour Tree' is an alternative name for the Common Elder tree, Sambucus nigra, often found in the older and more biodiverse local woodlands.
In 1903, the station witnessed the arrest of three leaders of the bande à Jacob (Jacob's band), a gang of anarchists (Marius Jacob, Pélissard and Félix Bour).
