The airport is the first major greenfield public airport development in Australia since the development of Melbourne's Tullamarine, although other locations such as Hamilton Island have been developed in that period.

The runway will be 2870 m long by 45 m wide, and capable of handling aircraft to 747 size.
There is currently a jet-capable airport being built within Wellcamp to service Toowoomba and the surrounding districts, it will be known officially as Brisbane West Wellcamp Airport.
