British Aluminium Company started hydropower plant development in 1906, and produced aluminium from 1908 to 1945.

Despite overcapacity during the 1960s, a large smelter built on the promise of cheap nuclear generated electricity commenced production in Invergordon in 1971; this plant would close eleven years later.

Its officials made pitches to large industrial power users, but aluminium companies Alcan, Alcoa and British Aluminium all rejected the possibility of building smelters in Labrador.
