From Seesen on the northwestern edge of the Harz near the A 7 motorway it runs through the Upper Harz past Clausthal-Zellerfeld, the High Harz, where it is combined for several kilometres with the B 4, past Braunlage and then through the eastern Harz foothills into Mansfelder Land.
The Carlshaushöhe and the Carlshaus Tower are located between the B 242 (north), B 81 (east) and B 4 (south) federal highways, so that it can be reached by walking trails leading from the car parks on these roads or their side-roads.

Bundesstraße 244 (abbreviation: B 244) is a federal road in Germany that branches off the B 4 west of Dedelstorf towards the east and runs through Wittingen, Brome, Rühen, Velpke, Helmstedt, Schöningen, Dardesheim, Wernigerode to Elbingerode, where it ends at the B 27.
