As a specialist in botany, he held various positions in experiment stations and colleges until 1901, when he was appointed physiologist in the Bureau of Plant Industry, United States Department of Agriculture, for which he wrote bulletins.
During World War II, he worked for the Bureau of Plant Industry on the Special Guayule Research Project on a series of experiments on root development.
At the time, Knapp was overseeing Farmers Cooperative Demonstration Work nationally through the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Bureau of Plant Industry.
Beattie went on to work for the Federal Horticultural Board, the Bureau of Plant Industry at the United States Department of Agriculture, during which he was involved in the development of plant inspection procedures.
The same year he received his PhD, he started his botanical career at the Bureau of Plant Industry for the United States Department of Agriculture, and worked there till he died in 1959.
