Ingwersen was born in Bryant, Iowa, a suburb of Clinton, but his parents and he moved across the river to Fulton, Illinois when Ingwersen was in grade school.
In 1932, Solem signed a three year contract to succeed Burt Ingwersen as the 13th head football coach at the University of Iowa.
