Butch Reed started wrestling in 1978 in the Kansas City territory after attending the University of Central Missouri and briefly playing professional football for the Kansas City Chiefs.
In 1992, the team disbanded and Champion went to the United States Wrestling Association (USWA), where he feuded with Butch Reed and Jerry Lawler over their top title.

His first stop on his second American excursion is for the NWA's Tri-State territory, where he spent a year wrestling the likes of Wahoo McDaniel, Butch Reed, and The Spoiler.
