The 6'11" Joakim played college basketball for the 2006 NCAA national champions and repeat 2007 NCAA champions, the University of Florida Gators, and was drafted by the Chicago Bulls of the NBA as the 9th overall pick.
He is the second Swedish national player to be selected in the NBA, after the Swedish-born American Miles Simon, although Joakim Noah has a Swedish mother, and Maciej Lampe and Damir Markota are naturalized Swedish citizens.
