Maurer played for the school's baseball team, which competes in the Trinity League, within the Southern Section of the California Interscholastic Federation.
He was a 2005-2006 Unanimous Parade All-American, an ALL CIF-SS Division-1 first-team selection, and rated the #2 overall player in the United States by ESPN.
Teams from the Los Angeles Unified School District (LAUSD) compete in a separate section, and Needles High School, at the far eastern edge of San Bernardino County, and Coleville High School, in the far north of Mono County, are members of the Nevada Interscholastic Activities Association.
In addition to his 829 victories, Cvijanovich led the Santa Clara program to three California State Championships (1989, 1990 and 1999), 15 CIF Southern Section titles, the second highest total in California history, and 30 league championships, the most ever.
He was named the CIF Southern Section football player of the year in 1951 after leading the school to its only football championship.

The stadium is also the finish for the famous Mt. SAC Cross Country course, which hosts as many as 17,000 participants to the Mt. SAC Cross Country Invitational, as well as playing host to the CIF Southern Section Cross Country prelims and finals, and the Western Regional preliminary to the Foot Locker Cross Country Championships.
He was also honored as First-team All-CIF Southern Section, CIF Southern Section Division II co-defensive player of the year, South Coast League defensive MVP and received votes on the Long Beach Press-Telegram Best in the West balloting.
They became the South Coast League champions, and also went to the CIF Southern Section championship game at the Honda Center where they beat Ventura High School.
Alemany won its first 12 games before losing its final game of the season, 28-21, against eventual champion Servite High School in the semifinals of the CIF Southern Section Pac-5 Playoffs.
