Lichens in the genera Xanthoria and Caloplaca have been recorded on exposed boulders from the shoreline to an elevation of 185 m.
There are about thirty species of Caloplaca in the flora of the British Isles.
It was named by the UK Antarctic Place-Names Committee after the abundant orange lichens of the genus Caloplaca, which encrust the sea cliffs around the cove.
