Aitken is also the founder of the Grass Roots Music Festival, funded as a special project by Brisbane's Lord Mayor Campbell Newman.
Newman was selected as one of 25 mayors from across the world shortlisted for the 2010 World Mayor Prize, an online competition aimed at raising the profile of civic leaders.
On 24 May 2012 the recently elected Newman government announced the withdrawal of state funds for the project.
In early April 2012, DS4SEQ presented a formal submission to the newly elected Premier of Queensland, Campbell Newman, to put forward the case for addressing daylight saving in Queensland.
The Brisbane City Council, however, were unable to stop the development, as the building complied with all regulations and zoning requirements, and so the Lord Mayor, Campbell Newman, asked the state government to stop the project.

On 1 July 2011, Bob Irwin announced he was considering challenging Labor incumbent Kate Jones and Liberal National Party leader Campbell Newman for the seat of Ashgrove in Brisbane, following discussions with Aidan McLindon over the impact of coal seam gas mining.
She attended Oakwood Collegiate Institute and the University of Toronto and married a fellow student T. Campbell Newman in 1925.
