Cape Flats

Its music spans from the serious-minded jazz of Abdullah Ibrahim and Basil Coetzee and their anthem 'Mannenberg' (named after a Cape Flats township), to the bubbly pop hits of Brenda Fassie; and continues in a new hip-hop movement.

The noted English naturalist, William John Burchell, remarked in 1811 that the deep sand of the Flats made travel by cart or wagon extremely difficult.

Shaun Bartlett

Raised by his grandmother in Factreton on the Cape Flats, Bartlett began playing for his church team and quickly developed a deft striking ability on the field.


Shaheen Ariefdien

Born in Cape Town, son of jazz musician Issy Ariefdien, he grew up in Elsie's River on the Cape Flats, but spent most of his earlier years travelling various parts of South Africa with his father.
