After spending two summers in Barbizon, the refuge of the plein-air painters, he settled down with his Swedish painter colleagues in 1882 in Grez-sur-Loing, at a Scandinavian artists' colony outside Paris.

In 1888 the young family was given a small house, named Little Hyttnäs, in Sundborn by Karin's father Adolf Bergöö.
It was drawn by the architect Ferdinand Boberg, and contains wall-paintings by Carl Larsson, depicting the Bergöö family and other well-known people of Hallsberg.

In 1997, Nationalmuseum bought the painting from the collector ordered a frame for stretching the canvas from Per Målare a carpenter in Gagnef, Dalarna, and installed it permanently where Carl Larsson had intended it to be.
In the following year, it was shown at the art gallery Liljevalchs konsthall as its first exhibit was dedicated to Carl Larsson, Bruno Liljefors and Anders Zorn.
