It is named after the composer Carl Maria von Weber, who was largely responsible for developing German Romantic opera.
With the same end in view he executed translations of many German songs, and wrote new French libretti for the best-known operas of Mozart, Weber and others.
His name appears among the alto singers in the chorus of the "Ancient Concerts" of 1798, and he took part with John Braham and others in the music performed at Weber's funeral in 1826.
Already as a student he conducted his first opera night with Carl Maria von Weber's opera "Oberon".
He has made a number of recordings, featuring concertos by Alexander Arutiunian, Vincenzo Bellini, Domenico Cimarosa, Joseph Haydn, Johann Nepomuk Hummel, William Lovelock, Richard Mills, Henri Tomasi and Carl Maria von Weber, with the MSO conducted by John Hopkins and Michael Halász.
A great success was obtained by his wide panoramas on the music of Jewish composers on the two last century, and the programmes dedicated to composers of the early Romanticism (Charles-Valentin Alkan, Juan Crisóstomo Arriaga, Ignaz Moscheles, George Pinto, Jan Václav Voříšek, Carl Maria von Weber …).
They co-authored the book Thinking for Orchestra (published by G. Schirmer), and a book about the orchestration of Jacques Offenbach selections, Nuits Parisiennes (RCA, Bote & Bock) as well as Carl Maria von Weber’s opera Die Drei Pintos.
All four of Louis Spohr's clarinet concertos and several of his other clarinet works, as well as Carl Maria von Weber's Grand duo concertant, were written with Hermstedt's skills in mind and were dedicated to him.

Under his management the Lyceum Theatre, London became the English Opera House, and staged the first English productions of many operas, including in 1824 Carl Maria von Weber's Der Freischütz.
In Frankfurt she was apparently the cause of the poor reception of Carl Maria von Weber's opera Silvana on its opening night, 16 September 1810: the people of the city flocked to see her demonstration while only a few attended the opera's debut.
