The genus name is derived from Carnia, the name of the region the fossil was found, and Greek daktylos, "finger", a reference to the wing finger typical of pterosaurs.
In 1944, General Krasnov and other Cossack leaders had persuaded Hitler to allow Cossack troops, as well as civilians and non-combatant Cossacks to permanently settle in the sparsely settled Carnia, in the Italian Alps.

The EITO exists thank to an initiative of Enore Deotto (Milano, † August, 9th, 2008 in Carnia) and the support of Luis-Alberto Petit Herrera (Madrid), Jörg Schomburg (Hannover) and Günther Möller (Frankfurt am Main).
The very year of his establishment, he had to face an attack by Henry III, Count of Gorizia, who destroyed Cassacco, and by Albert II of Austria, who occupied Carnia, Venzone, Udine, Gemona and besieged Cividale.
