As a youngster he had a cameo playing a schoolboy in Carry on Teacher (1959), Appreared in two films with Sir Norman Wisdom, Trouble In store (1953) and The Bulldog breed (1960) and later rejoined the famous Carry On series of films for Carry On Behind (1975), Carry On England (1976) and Carry On Emmannuelle (1978).

Hawkins is perhaps best known (and forever fondly remembered by many British males of a certain age) as a defining - if possibly reluctant - example of 1970s so-called "English crumpet", both for the role of Sharon Eversleigh and for her performances in two prime-period examples of the legendary Carry On film series: Carry On Abroad (1972), alongside Sally Geeson, and Carry On Behind (1975), alongside Sherrie Hewson.
More mainstream work included guest appearances in The Sweeney and The Goodies, several roles in British sex comedies and Carry On Behind (1975).
