The brook is named for the summer residence of Ontario's first colonial governor, John Graves Simcoe, which in turn was named for Simcoe's son, Francis Gwillim.

In the early morning hours of June 23, 2001, Magloire's half-brother, 19-year-old Justin Sheppard, was shot and killed on the footbridge that spans the ravine around Rosedale Valley Road between Bloor Street East and Glen Road near Sherbourne subway station in Toronto.
