4 unusual facts about Castletown


Castletown, Sunderland

A former mining community, the Hylton Colliery was located at the east end of the village, it lies north of the River Wear, and is near to Hylton Castle and Washington.

At Hylton Riverside, on the eastern fringe of Castletown, there is a large retail park hosting stores such as Matalan, Aldi and Pets at Home, Premier Inn hotel and a fitness club.

During the search for the Yorkshire Ripper, the accent of "Wearside Jack", the author of a hoax letter claiming to be from the Ripper, was identified by the forensic linguist Stanley Ellis as that of the Castletown area.

Phoenix breakwaters

Several Phoenix breakwaters are still in use in Britain: two are part of the harbour off Castletown at Portland Harbour and two can be dived in less than 10 metres of water off Pagham.


Alessandro Galilei

Galilei designed the façade of the main block of Castletown, the grandest Palladian house in Ireland, but returned to Italy in 1719 and was not associated with the actual construction of the house, which was begun in 1722 and carried through by the young Anglo-Irish architect Edward Lovett Pearce, who met Galilei in Florence while he was making drawings of Palladio's villa on his tour of Italy.

Lilliput, on the shores of Lough Ennel is in Dysart, a neighbouring village approximately 3 miles from Castletown Geoghegan.

Edward Lovett Pearce

He met in Italy the Florentine architect Alessandro Galilei, who was working from afar on a vast grandiose mansion near Dublin – Castletown.

Edward Michael Conolly

He was born Edward Michael Pakenham, son of Admiral Sir Thomas Pakenham by his wife Louisa, daughter of John Staples and niece of Thomas Conolly of Castletown.

Highland Amateur Cup

Pentland United won the final in 2008 beating fellow Caithness team Castletown 3–0.

Langness Peninsula

The small community of Derbyhaven is situated on this strip of land which lies close to Castletown, Isle of Man.

Manx Regiment

Until 2005 the Old Comrades of the Regiment ran a museum at Tromode, but their exhibits are now displayed at the Manx Aviation and Military Museum at Castletown.

Old House of Keys

Prior to 1821, the House of Keys had no official home, but met first at Castle Rushen, and later at the Bishop of Sodor and Man's library in Castletown.

It is located across the street from Castle Rushen in Castletown, the former capital of the Isle of Man, in the south of the island.

Port Erin

Bus services operate directly through a depot in Bridson Street in the village to the island's capital Douglas via Port St Mary, Colby, Castletown and Ballasalla using route numbers 1, 2, 11 and 12; these run about every twenty minutes at weekdays and Saturdays, with a less frequent service at weekends and after 6.00pm.

The first home game brought Castletown to the QEII for their first trip to Peel, for some years.
