Wynfrid Duckworth described the cave's floor as falling in height towards the entrance and it was covered in a soil that had the consistency of snuff in 1910.

During the summer months snow-melt streams flow beneath the debris piles and cause caves to form in the ice.
In 1995 South Australian cave diver Christopher Brown went another 20 metres further again, and in late 2008 much of the cave's more distant regions were explored, mapped (using radio-location "pingers" designed and operated by Ken Smith) and videotaped by Craig Challen and Dr Richard ("Harry") Harris et al. using hi-tech rebreather technologies.

Beyond the village, the landscape has two very unusual features: Creswell Crags and Markland Grips, both are dolomitic limestone gorges but the former is much more important as it has been identified as the home to prehistoric man and Creswell Crags hosts many famous caves.
