In 1856, he gained US citizenship and became identified with the city’s artistic community, “the guild,” joining the National Academy of Design, as well as the Century Club.
He was the first president of the first Civil Service Reform Association organized in the United States (1877), and was an organizer of the Union League Club of New York and of the Century Association in New York City.
He was a member of the Board of Trustees (Finance Committee), Middlebury College 1956-1973, as well as a member of the Century Club.
