Born to Chacko Joseph Kelachandra & Mariamma Joseph in a Knanaya Syrian Jacobite Church Christian family, spent most of his childhood in Coorg and later relocated to Bangalore.
Coming into contact with the American missionary Robert F. Cook in the 1920s, Chacko invited Cook to move to Thrikkannamangal from North India.
Karuvatta earned notoriety in Kerala when film representative Chacko was murdered in Karuvatta by Sukumara Kurup, the first accused and his co-accused accomplices in the sensational murder case of 1984 which shell-shocked not only Kerala's but also India's conscience.
