The names of the places in the series have been based on real villages in East Sussex: Camberwick Green from Wivelsfield Green, Trumpton from Plumpton and Chigley from Chailey.
At some point afterwards the squadron operated from Chailey.

His father Thomas Harry Lee Jellicoe, rector of Chailey, was a cousin of John Jellicoe, 1st Earl Jellicoe.
The two major towns served by the paper are Burgess Hill and Haywards Heath, including news from and around the surrounding parishes of Cuckfield, Lindfield, Hassocks, Chailey, and as far north as Forest Row.
RAF Chailey hosted 131 Polish Wing, with three squadrons, as well as No 18 Fighter Section, controlling three winds of three squadrons, five of which were also Polish (302, 306, 308, 315 and 317) as well as squadrons from Mysore (129), Natal (222), Belgium (349) and New Zealand (485).
He met Hazel (neé Brooker) (1931-2013) and Leonard George Wiles (1911–1995) at Chailey Hospital in Sussex in October 1967, and after initial opposition from his birth mother and Social Services, Leonard and Hazel were able to adopt the young Andrew.
