The area of Bang Kapi was once a jungle and has a history dating back to King Nangklao period when Chao Phraya Bodindecha (เจ้าพระยาบดินทรเดชา) led a troop to fight rebels in Champassack and Louangphabang and brought back people to settle here.

It is endemic to Laos and only known from the Bolaven Plateau in the Champasak Province, near its type locality within the Dong Houa Sao National Biodiversity Conservation Area.
