Charles Kean

Charles John Kean (18 January 1811 - 22 January 1868), was born at Waterford, Ireland, the son of the actor Edmund Kean.

He made his first appearance at Drury Lane on 1 October 1827 as Norval in Home's Douglas, but his continued failure to achieve popularity led him to leave London in the spring of 1828 for the provinces.

George Selth Coppin

In 1862 he built the Haymarket Theatre on the south side of Bourke Street, and in 1863 Mr and Mrs Charles Kean played a season there.

John Liptrot Hatton

On his return he became conductor of the Glee and Madrigal Union, and from about 1853 was engaged at the Princess's Theatre, London to provide and conduct the music for Charles Kean's Shakespearean revivals.


Henry Wyndham Phillips

Phillips painted portraits of Charles Kean for the Garrick Club and Robert Stephenson for the Institution of Civil Engineers, and exhibited 89 pictures in London between 1838-68.
