The Radclyffe family were ardent followers of the House of Stuart, James Radclyffe, 3rd Earl of Derwentwater (1689–1716), being raised at the court of the Stuarts in France as companion to James Francis Edward Stuart, the Old Pretender.

She was the daughter of the 2nd Earl of Newburgh and was the widow of Thomas Clifford, son of the 2nd Baron Clifford of Chudleigh.
His brother Charles Radclyffe, also involved in the rebellion, escaped to France, but was (like his brother) attainted of high treason.
On John's early death in 1731 they were claimed by his uncle, Charles Radclyffe, titular 5th Earl.
