Broken Hill City Library

The current building that houses the Broken Hill City Library was opened 1964 and was named the Charles Rasp Memorial Library.

Charles Rasp

He emigrated to Australia to improve his health in 1869 and worked at a variety of jobs on rural stations, eventually ending up at the Mount Gipps Station managed by George McCulloch, where he was employed as a boundary rider (Coulls, 1976 and Camilleri, 2006).

Charles Rasp (7 October 1846 – 22 May 1907) is known as the first person to identify the economic potential of the ore deposits at Broken Hill, New South Wales, Australia.

Mount Gipps Station

In 1883 a boundary rider from Mount Gipps named Charles Rasp who, along six fellow workers, formed the Syndicate of Seven and pegged out the mining claim for the one of the world's richest lode of silver, lead and zinc at Broken Hill in the Barrier Range forming the company Broken Hill Proprietry Limited.
