On November 20, 2009, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers announced that a single sample of DNA from Asian carp had been found above the electric barrier that had been constructed in the canal in an attempt to prevent them from migrating into the Great Lakes.
He is also an active Government lobbyist and promoter for keeping the Great Loop open for navigation through the Chicago Sanitary and Ship Canal that links the Great Lakes to the Illinois river and the Mississippi river basin, where an Asian Carp invasion threatens a hard lock closure of the USCG's Electronic Fish Barrier on the connecting navigable waterway.
By August 2009, they had become abundant in the Mississippi River watershed from Louisiana to South Dakota and Illinois, and had grown close to invading the Great Lakes via the Chicago Sanitary and Ship Canal.
