The children often went by the nickname "Chick", in reference to the number of pieces in a pack of Chiclets brand chewing gum (10).
The product's name is derived from Nahuatl word tziktli, in English chicle, the substance from which chewing gum was traditionally made.
In January 1962 she received a BSc (cum laude) in Chemistry from Brooklyn College and she chose to work for the Chiclets Chewing Gum Company in Long Island City as a chemist.
