One of the attractions for a visitor is the characteristic vernacular architecture of Chiloé that makes good use of features such as balconies and lookouts that create an air of simplicity and originality.
The settlement is named after the wife of the Lithuanian immigrant, F. A. Westhoff, who settled in the area when it was still part of Chiloé Province.
Some, like Ichuac, Aldachildo and Detif are more than 100 years old and have recently been declared World Heritage Sites, along with 15 other Chilote churches.
