The Khan of Nawagai, who rendered excellent service in the Chitral expedition, is alarmed and complains to the government of India.
He first saw active combat there in March 1895, at the Malakand Pass, where he was hit but not wounded; later in the year, he served with the relief force in the Chitral Expedition.
Whitchurch was 28 years old, and a surgeon captain in the Indian Medical Service, Indian Army during the Chitral Expedition of 1895 when, on the 3rd March, the following deed took place for which he was awarded the VC.
